Sonnets from Copenhagen

Sonnets from Copenhagen

by Pierre Sotér and Viktor Tegner

Pierre Sotér started writing poetry inspired by Copenhagen and this book is a tribute to the city. In 32 sonnets and a longer poem, Sortedams Sø, the lake around which the author spent most of his time in the city. Sonnets from Copenhagen is an emotional book that interacts with the soul, the nature, the life and the beauty of the city. The book is illustrated with photos by Viktor Tegner, which reveal and help discovering some of the fascinating sides of Copenhagen.

According to Pierre Sotér, “Beyond poetry, one of the most attractive aspects of Copenhagen is the constant challenging of conventional ideas and prevailing wisdom, and the search for new ways to exist. The existentialist seeds, sown by Søren Kierkegaard, are alive and strong, as the city experiments and invents, surprises and sometimes provokes. It cultivates a spirit of informal ceremony without losing its identity, historically rooted traditions and respect for its own symbols and values.”

A non-commercial limited edition has been released in July 2018 with the support of Konsul George Jorck og hustru Emma Jorck’s Fond.

The fruits of Halcyon days and August nights,
whose smells were clear visions of their taste,
vibrated where my soul never knew haste,
and all seasons rewrote unwritten lines.
And their seeds should return to fertile dust
as when lost memories fall into dreams,
and stars are painted in dark vaulted screens
where I would kneel, and lay, and even rust.
Their birth will kiss the sky with pure greens,
the breezes will caress the fragile leaves,
and in the fields emotions saved in sheaves
will pour grain in hearts with golden sheens.

The fruits of Halcyon days and August nights
will rebel, ripen, rise, and reach new heights.

Why is colour Red such a charming colour
that even things of other hues are Red?
Red is a blue deep sea, Red is a power,
Red is the wine which can make us so glad.
Why is speeding Red the most warming colour,
such an inspiration in a flying flag?
Red can be the Sun at the final hour,
is in the many tears that in vain we shed.
Red’s a warning, the fire’s burning glower,
at Red we stop and stare, and then we spread,
Red is the devil and Red is a flower,
the unseen line on which sometimes we tread.

Red is in the tone of our blood and lips.
Red’s a loving heart, the fire it keeps.
